Why Schools Across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Are Building Robotics Labs in 2026

Something shifted in school admissions across the Telugu states in the last couple of years. Principals tell us the same story from Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam: parents on admission tours used to ask about buses, board results and fees. Now, somewhere in the first ten minutes, someone asks — "Do you have a robotics lab? Who teaches it?"

That second question is the one that matters, and we'll get to it. But first, it's worth understanding why the wave is happening now — because it isn't a fad.

Three forces behind the wave

  • Policy stopped being polite about it. NEP 2020 asked for computational thinking from Class 6; CBSE has now mandated ~100 hours a year of computational thinking and AI for Classes 6–8 from 2026–27. Schools that ignored the nudge can't ignore the mandate.
  • The Atal Tinkering Lab effect. Hundreds of ATLs across both states normalised the idea that a school can house 3D printers and microcontrollers. Once a few schools in a district have one, every school's parents know it's possible.
  • Parents changed. Between Hyderabad's IT corridor and Andhra's massive engineering-diaspora families, parents in both states have first-hand knowledge of where careers are going. They're not asking whether their kids need these skills — they're comparing which school delivers them better.

The empty-lab trap

Here's the uncomfortable pattern we've seen in city after city — Karimnagar, Guntur, Rajahmundry, even Hyderabad: a school invests lakhs in a beautiful lab, cuts a ribbon, posts the photos… and eighteen months later the kits sit in a locked cupboard because nobody on staff can confidently teach with them. The lab becomes a room you show visitors, not a place students build things.

It's nobody's fault, exactly. Equipment is a purchase; teaching is a capability. Schools are experts at many things, but sourcing and retaining robotics engineers isn't usually one of them — and a lab without a program is furniture.

What the schools getting it right do differently

  • They budget for teaching, not just equipment. A rough rule from our experience: for every rupee on hardware, plan at least as much for the humans and curriculum that bring it alive.
  • They schedule robotics like a subject. Weekly, timetabled, per grade. "Whenever there's a free period" is how labs die.
  • They start before the lab is perfect. Some of our best-running programs started in an ordinary classroom with portable kits. The lab followed the program, not the other way round.
  • They put someone accountable on it. A partner, a dedicated hire, or a genuinely-supported teacher — but a name, not a committee.
  • They show, not tell. Working student projects at annual day and admission tours beat any brochure page.
