Who Should Teach Robotics at Your School: Your Teachers or Industry Experts?

When a school decides to take robotics seriously — and with CBSE's ~100-hour computational thinking and AI mandate for Classes 6–8, most now must — the very next question is deceptively simple: who stands in front of the students? We've watched schools across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh answer it three different ways. Here's what each looks like a year later, told as honestly as we can manage given that we obviously sell one of the options.
Option 1: Train your existing teachers
The appeal is obvious — your teachers know your students, your culture, your timetable, and the visible cost is lowest. And for the early grades, a motivated computer or science teacher with good training genuinely can run block-coding sessions well.
The trouble starts around Class 6, when the questions get real. A student's robot fails intermittently; is it the code, the wiring, a dying battery or a flaky sensor? An engineer diagnoses this on reflex, because they've broken hundreds of circuits. A teacher who attended a five-day workshop hasn't — through no fault of their own. Add a full existing syllabus load, and robotics quietly becomes the class that gets sacrificed whenever exams loom. And the cruel twist: the better your training investment works, the more employable that teacher becomes elsewhere.
Option 2: Hire a dedicated robotics specialist
On paper, the clean solution — a full-time engineer on staff, in-house capability, complete control. In practice, three hard problems. Engineers who can *teach children* (a genuinely different skill from engineering) are rare. The good ones cluster in metros and cost accordingly — schools outside Hyderabad can search for six months and settle. And the whole program hangs on one resignation letter: we've seen a two-year robotics program stop dead in a week.
Option 3: Partner with industry experts
This is our model, so read with appropriate salt. Specialist instructors — working engineers — come to the school every week and run the program end to end: curriculum, kits, instruction, assessment, competition prep. The strengths are structural: the expertise is current, the program doesn't depend on any one individual, and a partner serving many schools can afford the curriculum depth no single school could build alone. There's also an underrated effect — when a working engineer from Hyderabad teaches a Class 8 in Eluru or Karimnagar, students meet a living answer to "what does someone in tech actually do?" That's a careers lesson smuggled into a robotics class.
The honest weaknesses: it's a recurring cost, it lives or dies on the partner's quality, and a bad partner — the kind that sells kit boxes with a rotating cast of undertrained facilitators — is worse than no program. Vet ruthlessly: who exactly teaches, what's their background, how often are they in your school, and can you call two schools they've served for a year?
The hybrid that actually wins
After all the comparisons, the best-performing schools we've seen don't treat this as either/or. They partner for depth and put their own teachers in the room as co-learners.
